Make new friends, architects of another kind, aliens in art

Friday is here! Of course, that means more time to check out what's around town. Here are my three picks for the weekend. You can't possibly see everything, but that doesn't mean you can't catch at least one:

Cai Guo Qiang igniting his largest gunpowder drawing at MOCA. Photo by Carlos Gonzalez for Arrested Motion.
  • Feel the need to reach out and connect with someone new? Hub LA and Mindshare are at your service. Both organizations, known for bringing people together, are doing what they do best by hosting Mix & Mingle Fridays every month. Catch this month's at The Pie Hole. If you don't make a friend, at least you'll have good pie. Yum. April 6, Fri 5-8pm, The Pie Hole, 830 Traction Ave. #3A, Los Angeles, Free.
  • Degrees don't make a destiny. Sometimes, it's a nice sidetrip. Architects beyond Architecture, a panel presented by Woodbury University, shares the stories of architects by training who have pursued other fields such as food (Natasha Case of Coolhaus or Yeekai Kim of Cognoscenti Coffee) or even glassblowing (Carmen Salazar). April 6, Fri 6:30 pm, Woodbury University, Ahmanson Main Space,
  • 7500 Glenoaks Blvd,
  • Burbank, Free.
