Free Fri & Sat: New Materials and Fabrications

Posted by Carren Jao Pineda |

The new LA Plaza opening in April will have an exterior fence made of MicroTiles that will form a large video display. A proposed bike station near Staples Center might have LED panels powered by photovoltaics. Structure nowadays isn't just about simple concrete or wood. Science has found a way for architects and designers to re-think their choice of material.

If you are ever as curious as I am, perhaps you could pop by Material beyond Materials: A Composite Tectonics Conference on Advanced Materials and Digital Manufacturing at SCI-Arc. From the release:
...the two-day forum open to the public and the community at large will explore technological advances in composite materials, innovations in construction, and current design discourse—with some of the most important names in today’s building, fabrication and design industries.
It'll be two days of guest speakers and presentations, which might be too academic for some, but it would slake my thirst and perhaps provide some of answers to my perennial question, "How did they come up with that?"

Material beyond Materials: A Composite Tectonics Conference on Advanced Materials and Digital Manufacturing

Friday, March 25, 6-8pm
Saturday, March 26, 10am-5pm
