Make your own film fest: LA Freewaves

Posted by Carren Jao Pineda |

"We chose to present videos unconstrained by conventions," said Executive Director Anne Bray. True to form, LA Freewaves has been doing just that for 20 years this year. Kicking off with a celebration at the LACMA called "Video on the Loose," LA Freewaves wowed Angelenos with projected videos on the hailed art institution's north piazza.

It doesn't end there.

The celebration continues with Free Freewaves, a DIY kit for creating your very own film festival put together by LA Freewaves. The film festival can be any scale, from at-home screenings to large outdoor exhibitions, says Getty marketing intern, Saira Fazli.

LA Freewaves is putting the finishing touches on a handy online guide for wannabe festival directors. It'll even include information on where to rent projectors, said Saira. LA Freewaves will also be making their video archive available for use.

"LA Freewaves is all about encouraging new ideas, sharing art with the community," said Saira. It's also about "power to the people," it seems.
