LA Living: Jay Lopez

Posted by Carren Jao Pineda |

Real estate and art. This combination is what makes Jay Lopez uniquely suited to the role of Executive Director of the Downtown Art Walk, a monthly self-guided art walk held around downtown every second Thursday of the month. Uncover LA talks to this (gasp!) lifelong Angeleno. Say hello to:

Which part of LA do you call home? East Los Angeles.

What can we look forward to at this month's art walk? It's a surprise. Every gallery promotes their own shows. Even we're not aware of what's going to be shown until the first or second week of the month.

What does heading the Downtown Art Walk like? It's very exciting. Every day literally something new is going on.

What's the best thing about LA? The art. It's always great to see things like experimental site-specific work.

The worst thing about LA? The traffic. In my line of work, I never know where I'm going to be from one day to the next. Some days, I'm picking up art work in Riverside. Some days, I'll be in Santa Monica.

Where would you take people to get a taste of LA? I'd walk them through downtown'sHistoric Core, near the South Park side.

How best can we appreciate downtown LA? Look up. Most natives always rush around and they forget to see what's right above their heads.

The next Downtown Art Walk is tonight from noon to 9 pm. Check their website for more information. Watch this video of a previous Downtown Art Walk, so you'll know what you're in for.
